Shortall, Mary Carter Shortall, Harrington Shortall, and other members of the Shortall, Carter, Harrington, Dunbaugh, and allied families; biographical and genealogical information (published and unpublished); notes, cards, postcards, certificates, and miscellaneous items, primarily concerning personal, family, and philanthropic topics. Includes a sermon by Rev. Timothy Harrington, 1759; letters to John G. Shortall from Horace Greeley (for whom Shortall worked before moving west), 1853-72; biography of Greeley, by Shortall (typescript, 14 p.); letters from the War Department about the Civil War death of Pierce S. Shortall, his brother, at the battle of Averysboro, 1865; petition to the Illinois Central Railroad by Prairie Avenue residents about noise, 1891; admission to the bar, 1894; Illinois Humane Society items, 1899-1907; materials about Graceland Cemetery tomb and condolences on the deaths of John G. and John L. Shortall (1934); an essay about early Chicago, "A Backward Glance," written 1897; travel journal; and correspondence of Mary C. Shortall with her children and their governess, 1890-1903.
